札幌雪祭始於1950年，當時當地的中學生和高中生在大通公園建立了六座雪雕，由市內三所高中和兩所初中學生製作的雪雕在大通七丁目廣場展出，該地曾是當地居民的雪堆放地。此外，廣場還舉辦了廣場舞、歌唱比賽和狗賽跑等活動，特別設置了專用賽道。這一活動被認可為該市的年度盛事。雪祭期間更舉行國際雪雕競賽，這是一場來自世界各國、地區和城市的團隊競爭創作雪雕的比賽。 這些獨特的國際雪雕是在雪祭期間創作的，也是唯一一個能在大通現場近距離觀賞雪雕製作的機會。

The Sapporo SnowFestival began in 1950 when local junior and senior high school students constructed six snow sculptures. These sculptures were displayed at Odori 7-chome Square, a site that had previously served as a snow dumping area for local residents. The square also hosted various activities, including square dancing, singing contests, and dog races, with a designated track for these events.

This celebration has since been recognized as an annual highlight for the city. During the festival, an International Snow Sculpture Contest is held, featuring teams from around the world competing to create stunning snow sculptures. These unique international sculptures are crafted during the festival, providing a rare opportunity for visitors to observe the creation of snow art up close at the Odori site.
